It's been a busy 2017 for us at La Diseñoteca so far, but after 6 months of hard work, we are happy to announce our upcoming Kickstarter project: Genkan!
Genkan arose from a need to store our shoes in the entrance of our house without just piling them on the floor. We checked some shoe cabinets at IKEA, and used a cheap shoe rack for a while, but all of the options we found were either ugly, clunky, flimsy, or worse. There had to be a better solution!
In an effort to use up some of the scrap wood we had lying around from previous projects, we set to designing an alternative with the following in mind: Light, movable, and easy to use; a small footprint for our small entrance hall; and of course, beautiful. With that in mind, we set to making the first prototype using some left over sapele strips from a batch of Split Stools.
The proportions were off, but at least the concept worked! After a few weeks of use we identified the crucial changes and set to making the second prototype. This time, rather than gluing the pieces together with a dowel for stability, we used brass bolts. They provided the same visual effect while also allowing the piece to be taken apart for transportation. By extending the vertical bars slightly, we also eliminated the possibility of any scuff marks on the wall from shoe heels.
We were quite happy with this model and ended up using it for several months before deciding which final changes to make. With a few small adjustments we were able to greatly increase the sizes and types of shoes that would fit. Around this time we also starting looking into Kickstarter as a way of bringing this product to the public. The process of finding a manufacturer, figuring out freight shipping, and planning the campaign itself was long, but at last it's finished!
The campaign will begin in full on Tuesday, March 21st and run for 30 days. This is your best chance to pick one up at a reduced price, and your backing would mean a lot to us! Have a look at the page and please share it with all of your shoe loving friends!
